The purple light cast by the Silent Isolation Barrier hung over the Chaos Diner like a shroud of bruised velvet.
Inside the enclosed perimeter, the natural wind had ceased entirely. The air grew dense, heavy with the sharp, metallic tang of spirit-venom and cold shadow Qi. The four Shadow Guards positioned along the pavilion’s eaves did not move like ordinary men; their bodies shimmered, blurring at the edges as if their very existence were anchored halfway between the real world and a nether realm.
"A joint-killing formation," Ling Yue warned, her knuckles turning white around the hilt of her blue steel sword. The frigid aura radiating from her body caused frost to web across the polished dark ironwood floorboards beneath her boots. "Xiao Long, the leader at Stage 8 anchors the barrier, while the three at Stage 5 and 6 strike from the shadows. Their daggers carry Nine-Toxin Ghost Slime. A single scratch will paralyze your Dantian within three breaths."
"A single scratch?" Leo repeated, weighing the heavy, dark iron butcher’s cleaver in his right hand while holding the cast-iron skillet in his left. "Sounds like poor sanitary conditions. In the food service industry, cross-contamination is a health code violation."
"You are still joking?!" Ling Yue’s temple throbbed, though her eyes remained laser-focused on the roofline.
"I'm never joking about sanitation, Senior Sister," Leo replied smoothly, his eyes flashing with a faint, dark-golden light. "Watch my back. I’ll handle the prep work."
"Execute," the Stage 8 leader rasped from above.
SWOOSH!
The four assassins vanished simultaneously.
There was no sound of boots springing off tile, no displacement of air—only four streaks of black shadow that dissolved into the ambient purple light of the barrier.
In the next millisecond, three black daggers dripping with purple poison materialized out of thin air three inches from Leo’s throat, heart, and lower abdomen. The strikes were silent, lethal, and perfectly synchronized from three dead angles.
"Too predictable," Leo muttered.
Instead of dodging, Leo planted his back foot and detonated a wave of dark-golden Chaos Qi outward from his core.
BOOM!
A short-range shockwave of primordial energy exploded around his body like a miniature supernova. The sheer physical density of the Chaos Qi slammed into the three incoming assassins mid-thrust, shattering their momentum and blowing away the shadow concealment surrounding their bodies.
"What?!" one of the Stage 5 guards gasped as his dagger was pushed back by the sheer force of the gold-and-black aura.
"First rule of the kitchen," Leo gritted his teeth, stepping forward into the guard's guard. "Keep your work station clean!"
Leo swung his cast-iron skillet in a brutal, horizontal arc.
THWACK!
The heavy iron pan struck the first assassin square in the side of his helmet. The silver porcelain mask shattered into a hundred fragments, and the man’s body folded like an accordion before being launched sideways, crashing straight through the outer stone wall of the courtyard.
Before the remaining two guards could adjust their balance, Leo spun on his heel, his newly purchased [Chaos Butcher's Cleaver] trailing a dark crimson arc through the dim air.
SLASH!
The blade—infused with Chaos Qi that ignored forty percent of defensive armors—cleaved effortlessly through the second assassin's iron-reinforced shoulder plates. The man let out a strangled shriek as his dark Qi armor disintegrated like wet tissue paper, sending him flying backward onto the marble terrace with a gaping chest wound.
"Die, beast!"
The third assassin dropped from directly overhead, aiming his poisoned blade straight down toward the crown of Leo’s head.
CLANG!
A wall of brilliant, crystalline ice manifested inches above Leo’s hair, catching the assassin’s blade dead in its tracks. Ling Yue appeared beside Leo like a phantom, her blue sword thrusting forward in a lightning-fast, triple-tap combination.
"Frost-Lotus Style—Three-Petal Piercing!"
PUNCTURE! PUNCTURE! PUNCTURE!
Three sharp beams of icy Qi pierced the third assassin’s shoulders and thigh, freezing his meridians solid instantly. The guard fell from the air like a heavy block of ice, crashing onto the stone floor, completely immobilized.
"Three down," Leo grinned, flicking a drop of dark blood off the cleaver’s edge. "Nice assist, Senior Sister."
"Do not celebrate yet!" Ling Yue shouted, her eyes darting upward.
High above the pavilion, the leader of the Shadow Guards—the Stage 8 expert—had not engaged in the initial assault. Instead, he had used his subordinates as distractions to complete a high-tier imperial array.
Floating ten feet above the roof, the leader held a jagged obsidian talisman that glowed with a terrifying, crimson light. The entire Silent Isolation Barrier began to shrink rapidly, condensing its purple energy into a swirling, forty-foot vortex of razor-sharp shadow blades directly above the diner.
"Forbidden Imperial Art—Soul-Grinding Crimson Mill!" the leader roared, his voice echoing with desperate, murderous rage. "Perish along with your worthless diner, trash!"
The massive vortex of shadow blades descended like a falling sky, threatening to shred the entire two-story wooden pavilion, the terrace, and everything inside it into microscopic dust.
Ling Yue’s face turned pale. "That attack... it carries the concentrated power of a peak Stage 8 strike! We cannot block it head-on!"
"Block it?" Leo looked up at the falling vortex, his dark eyes glowing with absolute, unshakeable confidence. "Who said anything about blocking?"
Leo opened his System menu inside his mind.
"System! Convert 500 SP into Chaos Qi capacity and activate [Chaos Kitchen Manifestation: Overdrive]!"

BOOM!
A column of roaring, dark-golden fire—fueled entirely by purified Chaos energy—erupted from Leo’s body, illuminating the entire mountain peak in brilliant, blinding light. The heat was not the scorching, destructive fire of an imperial array; it was a dense, ancient, cooking-grade heat that burned away impurities and dissolved lesser Qi structures instantly.
Leo leaped twenty feet straight up into the air, meeting the descending forty-foot shadow vortex head-on.
He held his cast-iron skillet upside down in his left hand and his butcher’s cleaver in his right, crossing them in front of his chest like a pair of sacred culinary instruments.
"Detroit Style..." Leo’s voice resounded through the night sky like rolling thunder. "...Deep Fry!"
Leo swung both arms outward in a massive cross-slash.
KABOOM!
The roaring column of golden Chaos fire collided with the crimson shadow vortex.
The imperial array didn't just break—it was literally cooked away. The razor-sharp shadow blades melted like lard dropped onto a red-hot griddle, dissolving into harmless wisps of grey steam that drifted away into the night air.
"IMPOSSIBLE!" the Stage 8 leader screamed, his eyes bulging out of his head as the kinetic shockwave hit him full-force. His obsidian talisman shattered into powder, and his Dantian exploded outward, spraying a fountain of black blood as he was launched five hundred feet backward into the high bamboo canopy.
The purple barrier shattered like thin glass.
Night air rushed back into the courtyard, bringing with it the cool breeze of the mountain pines and the peaceful chirping of night crickets.
Leo landed gracefully back on the marble terrace, doing a smooth, fluid flip with his cleaver before sheathing it back into his inventory. He adjusted his charcoal robe, checked his skillet for scratches, and let out a long, relaxed sigh.
"Man," Leo chuckled, looking around the terrace. The building was completely untouched, save for a single cracked stone tile where the second assassin had landed. "Zero structural damage to the seating area. Now that's what I call clean work."
[PING!]

Ling Yue slowly lowered her sword, her blue eyes staring at Leo in utter, Speechless awe. She looked at the destroyed forest canopy five hundred feet away where the Stage 8 leader had vanished, then back at the relaxed boy who was casually wiping his skillet with a clean napkin.
"You... you just obliterated an entire imperial elite squad..." Ling Yue whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "...without letting a single stray spark hit the dining tables?"
"Of course," Leo smirked, walking over to the wooden counter and pouring two cups of iced honey-mint tea. He handed one to her with a wink. "Reputation is everything in the restaurant business, Senior Sister. If customers see blood on the furniture, Yelp reviews go straight to hell."
Ling Yue took the tea cup, her fingers brushing against his. A faint blush dusted her cheeks in the moonlight, but she quickly took a sip to hide it, a soft, helpless laugh escaping her lips.
"You truly are an absurd human being, Leo Miller," she murmured softly.
"Hey, I'm just an accountant trying to make an honest living," Leo grinned, looking up at the starry sky. "And speaking of business... tomorrow, we expand the menu."
