Chapter 37: The Saturday Painting Crew

On Saturday morning at eight AM, the transformation of the 5th Street shop began.

Ethan, Maya, Leo, and Sarah arrived carrying buckets of dark forest green paint, roller trays, brushes, and rolls of blue painter's tape.

Ethan had rented a heavy floor sander from the hardware store, and by nine-thirty AM, the shop was filled with the loud, vibrating roar of the machine smoothing out fifty years of scuffs on the wooden floorboards.

Sawdust flew everywhere, coating their clothes, hair, and faces in a fine tan powder.

"My nostrils are full of wood dust!" Leo yelled over the roar of the sander.

"Keep pushing, Leo!" Maya called back from her step stool, where she was carefully taping off the white window trim near the front.

By noon, the floor was smooth, clean, and prepped for staining.

They took a break, sitting on empty paint buckets near the front window, eating cold turkey sandwiches that Sarah had brought from the bakery.

Ethan looked at Maya—she had a streak of green paint across her left cheekbone, her hair tied in a messy bun, her hands covered in white drywall dust—and thought she’d never looked more beautiful in her life.

"What are you staring at, grease monkey?" she asked, catching him looking.

"Green paint on your cheek," Ethan said, reaching out to wipe it gently with his thumb.

"Did you get it?"

"Made it worse," Ethan admitted, grinning.

Maya rolled her eyes, but she reached out and grabbed his hand, holding it firmly between hers as they finished their lunch in the sunny, dusty room.

By five PM, the left brick wall was cleaned and sealed, the right wall was painted a deep, rich forest green, and the wooden floor was coated in a dark walnut stain that made the old wood glow like new under the afternoon light.

They stood near the entrance, looking inside at their hard work.

The transformation was incredible.

The old, forgotten vacuum shop was gone—replaced by a warm, inviting space that smelled of fresh varnish, cedar wood, and promise.

"We did it," Sarah breathed, leaning her head on Leo's shoulder.

"Yeah," Ethan said softly, wrapping his arm around Maya's waist, feeling her body rest against his as the sun set over 5th Street. "We did."
