Chapter 42: The Bridge & The Patriot (Part 1)

The rain had turned into a thick, misty drizzle over the East River, turning the steel cables of the Brooklyn Bridge into slick, shining ribbons in the dark.

It was 3:00 AM, but the bridge was lit up like a stadium.

Dozens of NYPD cruisers, armored S.H.I.E.L.D. BearCats, and high-powered searchlight trucks formed an impassable wall of flashing red, blue, and white across the Manhattan-bound lanes. Tactical barricades blocked every inch of asphalt, and armed agents in heavy riot gear stood shoulder-to-shoulder with rifles raised.

Standing at the apex of the blockade, his navy-blue uniform damp from the mist, was Captain America.

Steve Rogers stood with his hands resting on the leather straps of his Vibranium shield—now thoroughly scrubbed clean of last night’s pepperoni grease. His face was set in a firm, unyielding mask of absolute resolve.

"Listen up!" Steve’s voice boomed over the tactical comms, carrying effortlessly through the foggy air. "We are not here to wage a war. We are here to contain a dangerous, unpredictable element before anyone else gets hurt. Keep your weapons on non-lethal, hold the line, and do not engage him verbally. If he starts laughing... cover your ears."

"Cap, we’ve got eyes on the target," a S.H.I.E.L.D. spotter called out from a sniper perch high on the stone archway. "One vehicle approaching from the Brooklyn side. It’s... a pink-and-white ice cream truck playing 'Pop Goes the Weasel' at maximum volume."

Steve closed his eyes for a single second, taking a long, steady breath. "Of course it is."

ALL-A-ROUND-THE-COB-BLER'S-BENCH...

THE-MON-KEY-CHASED-THE-WEA-SEL...

The rusted, vintage 1970s ice cream truck bounced down the incline of the bridge, its broken speakers screeching the tinny melody into the fog. The giant fiberglass ice cream cone on the roof had been spray-painted with a messy crimson smile and a black eye-patch.

The truck ground to a halt thirty yards from the police barricade, its tires smoking against the damp asphalt.

Inside the cab, Jack was sitting behind the wheel, wearing a paper soda-jerk hat perched crookedly on his messily painted white head. His [35.0% SYNCHRONIZATION] was buzzing in his ears like a choir of cracked trumpets, his bloodshot eyes glowing through the dark.

In the passenger seat, Natasha was calmly loading a fresh magazine into her suppressed Glock, her dark red hair framing her cool, composed face. In the back, sitting among boxes of frozen popsicles, Felicia was balancing a pair of smoke grenades on her fingertips.

"You know, Jack," Natasha murmured, her steel-grey eyes scanning the fifty armed men standing behind Captain America, "if we wanted to avoid attention, taking an ice cream truck onto a heavily guarded bridge wasn't our best tactical decision."

"Avoid attention?!" Jack gasped, clutching his chest in mock offense. "Red! We just hijacked primetime television, turned Iron Man into a TikTok sensation, and transferred thirty million bucks to Aunt May! We are CELEBRITIES! We don't sneak into Manhattan like rats... we arrive in STYLE!"

Jack leaned out the truck window, slamming his hand repeatedly on the horn—which had been re-wired to play a loud, obnoxious clown honk.

HONK-HONK! HONK-HONK!

"HEY, CAPTAIN!" Jack screech-screamed over the bridge, his raspy voice bouncing off the cables. "IS THIS THE TOLL BOOTH?! OR ARE YOU JUST HAPPY TO SEE MY ICE CREAM?!"

Steve stepped forward from the barricade, unstrapping his Vibranium shield and holding it ready. His eyes were cold, steady, and completely unbothered by Jack's theatrics.

"Jack!" Steve called out, his voice cutting clean through the foggy drizzle. "It’s over! The bridge is locked down. S.H.I.E.L.D. has the river blocked below, and Air One is overhead. Step out of the vehicle and surrender!"

Jack’s mouth stretched into an ear-to-ear crimson scar of a grin. He reached into his lavender velvet jacket, pulling out three high-explosive party poppers and a giant mechanical crank.

"Surrender?!" Jack cackled into the mist, his chest vibrating with a low, raspy hehehe. "Oh, Cap... you really don't know how the circus works, do you?! WHEN THE ROAD IS BLOCKED... YOU JUMP THE RAMP! HAHAHAHA!"

Jack slammed his heavy boot down on the accelerator, sending the ice cream truck roaring straight toward Captain America and the blockade!
