Chapter 55: Slow Life, High Above (Part 2)

As the sun sank toward the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet, amber, and brushed gold, the coastal villa settled into an even deeper tranquility.

The soft hum of jazz drifted from a restored vintage record player in the corner of the open-concept living room. Vinyl static crackled softly under the needle, mixing with the gentle rhythmic lapping of the waves against the shore below.

In the kitchen, the scent of sautéed garlic, fresh basil, and simmering tomatoes drifted through the air.

Natasha stood at the marble island, wearing a simple apron over her sweater, expertly chopping herbs with a chef’s knife. Jack leaned against the counter beside her, sipping a deep burgundy red wine from a crystal glass, occasionally trying to steal a slice of freshly toasted garlic bread right from under her hand.

"Hands off, clown," Natasha hummed without looking up, tapping the flat of her knife lightly against his knuckles. A soft, warm smile danced on her lips. "Dinner's in ten minutes."

"I'm just quality control, Moscow!" Jack rasped playfully, taking another small sip of wine and wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder. "You know, for a legendary KGB operative, you make a surprisingly mean arrabbiata."

"Survival skills," she replied smoothly, leaning back into his chest with a quiet sigh of contentment. "You learn to appreciate good food when you spend years eating military rations in sub-zero safehouses."

Felicia stepped back inside from the patio, holding two empty wine glasses. She had swapped her loungewear for an oversized silk shirt, her platinum hair loosely tied in a messy bun. She set the glasses on the counter and grabbed a piece of garlic bread before Natasha could stop her, taking a victorious bite with a mischievous grin.

"The sunset outside is ridiculous tonight," Felicia said, leaning back against the wooden dining table. "No searchlights, no Quinjet engines, no sirens. I could actually get used to this."

They brought the food and a fresh bottle of wine out to the wooden deck overlooking the ocean. They sat together on the low floor cushions surrounding a small gas fire pit, letting the cool evening air blow past while the warmth of the fire kept them comfortable.

Through [The Royal Flush Command], the shared neural link felt completely different tonight. Instead of tactical data, target markers, or adrenaline spikes, it vibrated with a gentle, hummed resonance of pure comfort, affection, and quiet satisfaction.

Jack raised his glass toward the dark blue horizon where the sky met the sea.

"To no plans," Jack toasted softly, his crimson scar illuminated by the warm orange flicker of the fire pit. "To no explosions, no heists, and no capes."

Natasha and Felicia clinked their glasses against his.

"To no plans," Natasha echoed softly, her grey eyes reflecting the firelight as she rested her head against Jack’s arm.

"To no capes," Felicia added with a quiet chuckle, taking a slow sip.

The record player inside clicked onto the next song, filling the quiet night with smooth, slow brass notes as the three of them sat together under the starlit Long Island sky, completely at peace.
