Stoppage Time

At twenty-nine, Kit Rawley has run out of time. Released by a Championship academy at eighteen, he's spent eleven years sliding down the English football pyramid. Now he leads the line for Wetherfold Town: seventh tier, three hundred fans, one covered stand and a heckler called Dennis. He's scored once all season. His retirement text is already written. After Saturday, he's done. Then the referee signals four minutes of added time, and a glowing green board appears above the centre circle. Nobody else can see it. For the rest of stoppage time, Kit can see five seconds into the future. Only after the ninetieth minute. Only in the maroon shirt. And every time he uses it, something bleeds. The club is broke. Its ground is about to become sixty-four new-build houses. And the only person who seems to understand what's happening is the seventy-eight-year-old kitman, who has been waiting half a century for the board to come back. Five seconds isn't much. But in football, five seconds is the gap between a miss and a goal, a defeat and a draw, a club that dies and a club that climbs. It isn't over until the final whistle.
