Morning light broke through the cracked glass roof of the Coney Island Funhouse, painting the dusty wooden floorboards in streaks of soft, gold-and-amber moonlight's hangover. The sharp, salty Atlantic breeze drifted through the gaps in the wall, carrying the smell of sea foam, wet plywood, and ozone.
Jack stirred awake on the edge of the wooden stage. For the first time in weeks, the buzzing manic static behind his skull felt quiet—not gone, but smoothed out into a deep, steady rhythm. The white greasepaste was completely wiped from his face, leaving his bare skin pale, bruised, and human. The lipstick crimson was smudged, but his features were soft, defined, and relaxed.
Beside him, Natasha sat with her knees drawn to her chest, wearing an oversized, dark green faded sweater, idly sipping black coffee from a paper cup she’d scavenged from a boardwalk bodega. Her dark red hair fell over her shoulders in soft, damp waves. A faint, lingering trace of the red balm was still rubbed into the collar of her sweater.
"Morning, chaos," Natasha murmured, her voice warm, low, and quiet. Her steel-grey eyes flicked over to him with a look that was entirely stripped of the Black Widow's icy operational walls. "You look remarkably human when you're not trying to blow up an arcade."
Jack propped himself up on one elbow, his chest bandages shifting as he let out a dry, raspy chuckle. His lips curved into a soft, unpainted smile—no theatrics, no unhinged screeching, just Jack.
"And you look remarkably cozy for an international operative who just spent the night with a wanted domestic terrorist," Jack rasped, reaching over and casually yanking the coffee cup right out of her hand to take a long gulp. "Mm. Cheap, bitter, and slightly burnt. Tastes like heaven."
Natasha didn't snatch the cup back. Instead, she leaned in, resting her chin lightly on his uninjured shoulder, her long fingers idly tracing the faint line of his collarbone beneath his shirt.
"You know, Jack..." Natasha murmured softly, her thumb brushing over the scarred skin near his neck. "...when the chalk paint comes off, you're actually kind of dangerous in a completely different way."
"Oh, really, Moscow?" Jack purred, turning his face toward her, their noses practically touching in the morning light. "Are you saying you prefer the tragic, mysterious vagrant over the handsome, theatrical clown? Because I can bring back the air-horns if you're getting bored."
Natasha let out a soft, genuine laugh—a rare, quiet sound that echoed sweetly against the empty plywood walls. She reached up, cupping the side of his face, her thumb stroking his cheekbone.
"I think I like the guy underneath just fine," Natasha whispered against his lips, leaning in to press a slow, deep, lazy kiss onto his mouth. "Even if he eats cold pizza off Captain America's shield."
"Hey! That was prime Vibranium seasoning!" Jack grinned against her lips, his hands wrapping around her waist to pull her closer onto his lap.
Before the moment could stretch any further into the quiet morning, heavy combat boots came stomping down the main arcade hall.
"Alright, lovebirds, break it up!" Felicia's voice bounced off the rafters as she strutted in, holding a brown paper bag of fresh bakery bagels in one hand and a military-grade encryption tablet in the other. "I know you two just survived the ultimate hero showdown, but the city doesn't sleep—and neither does Tony Stark's satellite array."
Natasha slowly pulled back, giving Jack one last lingering look before shifting smoothly back into her alert, poised posture. Jack sat up, stretching his arms until his spine popped with a satisfying CRACK.
"What's the word, Kitty?" Jack asked, his eyes gleaming as that familiar, electric spark of [30.0% SYNCHRONIZATION] began to hum softly at the base of his neck. "Did Stark launch an orbital strike on Coney Island yet?"
"Worse," Felicia grinned, tossing a hot toasted bagel into Jack's lap before tapping her tablet screen. "Stark, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the NYPD just put a ten-million-dollar bounty on 'The Joker of Manhattan.' And tonight? There's a private, high-society black-market auction happening in a subterranean vault right under the Meatpacking District."
Jack took a huge, shameless bite out of the bagel, his jaw working as his bloodshot eyes widened with pure, unadulterated joy.
"A subterranean black-market auction?!" Jack gasped, a low, raspy hehehe bubbling up from his chest as he looked over at Natasha. "Oh, Red... tell me we're going! Tell me I get to wear my lavender blazer again!"
Natasha shook her head, a dangerous, amused smirk playing at the corners of her lips as she leaned back against the stage pillar.
"Only if I get to hold the auction paddle, Jack," Natasha purred. "Because if you're buying anything with Fisk's credit cards... I'm picking out the luxury sports car."
Jack threw his head back, his raspy, unhinged cackle echoing into the rafters of the Funhouse as the morning sun fully filled the room.
