After getting yelled at by Dadan until their ears went numb for three and a half tapes, and getting knocked on the head once each for bringing a stranger in and disturbing everyone's sleep, Luffy and Kolas finally made it out of the mountain bandits' hideout alive.
Today was the day Luffy had decided to set out to sea and finally start being a real pirate!
The two of them walked down to the beach at Foosha Village, with the villagers and Makino coming to see them off. The villagers' smiles and laughter warmed Kolas's heart to the max.
"Take care of yourselves, Luffy! You too, Kolas!" Makino waved with a sweet smile.
"Yeah! See you later, everyone!" Luffy laughed and waved back cheerfully, then jumped up and stood on a tiny little rowboat.
Kolas looked at the boat in front of him and almost cried. Shit. This tiny thing? Honestly, just rowing out to the mouth of the bay would be a miracle. But whatever. Since he'd ended up in the One Piece world, he couldn't chicken out now. He sighed long and hard and stepped onto the boat next to Luffy.
"Alright, vice captain! Let's set off!" Luffy shouted.
The tiny boat slowly drifted away from the shore. The sea wind hit Kolas in the face and made him so excited he got goosebumps.
But then... the water around the boat started spinning in a spiral, and a giant wave shot up from underneath!
Splaaaash!
The old sea monster, the "Lord of the Coast," a huge, scary-looking giant, burst up out of the water. It bared its sharp fangs and roared across the sea!
"Shiiiiit! It's so damn big!" Kolas screamed, cracking his voice, and automatically hid behind Luffy. The real thing was ten times bigger than on the screen!
"Hahaha, it's you again!" Luffy wasn't scared at all. He stood there grinning and casually rolled up his sleeves. "Ten years ago you messed me up... but I'm not the same as before!"
Luffy pulled his right arm way, way back, and his rubber arm stretched out so long that Kolas, standing next to him, could only stare.
"Eat this... Gum-Gum... Cannon!"
Boooom!
Luffy's fist slammed into the Lord of the Coast's face at full power! The sound shook everything, and the wind was so strong that sea spray flew everywhere. The giant flipped over, spinning through the air, then flew into the water and got knocked out cold!
"Amaaazing!" Kolas yelled, his eyes sparkling. A legendary scene for real! One punch and done. So damn cool, Captain!
Luffy grinned, raised his hand to the sky, and turned to Kolas. "How was that, vice captain! Did you see how strong your captain is?!"
"Yeah, super cool, man!" Kolas laughed. "But, hey... Luffy..."
"Hm? What's up?"
"We... don't have any oars. And I don't know which way the boat is drifting!" Kolas pointed at the empty floor of the boat.
Luffy looked blank for three seconds, then tilted his head and laughed. "Hahahaha! You're right! Then let's just let it drift with the wind!"
Yeah, great... my captain is really that chill. Kolas looked up at the sky and held his head, but inside he was really happy about starting this adventure.
After drifting aimlessly at sea for quite a while, Kolas, lying flat on his back in the boat, started to feel the wind getting weirdly stronger and the sound of the waves getting louder. When he pushed himself up to look, there it was...
"Shit, Luffy! There's a giant whirlpool ahead!" Kolas yelled in a high voice, pointing at a huge whirlpool spinning and sucking everything down under the sea.
"Oh! You're right! A big whirlpool!" Luffy looked over with a relaxed face.
"What do we do?! No oars, the boat's gonna break for sure, man!" Kolas panicked and ran around the boat.
"Don't worry! There's a food barrel right here!" Luffy laughed, and stuffed himself into the big wooden barrel and closed the lid.
"Hey! What about me, Captain! Take me with you, dude!" Kolas yelled, but it was too late. The whirlpool sucked the rowboat under in the blink of an eye!
...
Cut to Alvida's pirate ship. Alvida was a huge old lady with a spiked club who bullied her crew.
"Coby! Who's the most beautiful person on this sea?!" Alvida's booming shout made the small bespectacled boy, Coby, shake all over.
"W-well, that would be you, Lady Alvida, of course!" Coby answered in a shaky voice, afraid of getting hit on the head with the spiked club.
After getting yelled at, Coby was ordered to carry a big barrel of liquor from the storeroom. Three crew members secretly followed him in, wanting to slack off and drink for free.
"Hey, Coby! Don't you dare tell that old lady we're here!" the pirates threatened.
"Y-yes!" Coby nodded nervously.
Just then the pirates found a giant wooden barrel floating against the side of the ship. "Whoa! What a huge barrel! There must be good liquor inside!"
One pirate raised an axe, about to smash the lid open...
Bam!
The lid of the barrel blew off! Luffy's fist shot out and hit the pirate in the face, knocking him out and sending him flying into the wall!
"That was a comfy sleep!" Luffy stretched, arms and legs, and climbed out of the barrel like it was nothing.
"A-aaah! Someone came out of the barrel!" The remaining pirates panicked.
Before they could recover, the barrel next to it that had been hauled up together got its lid kicked off too!
"Ughhh! I swallowed so much seawater, damn! Luffy, you stuffed me in a barrel and I almost died!" Kolas crawled out of the barrel soaking wet, grumbling and wiping his face.
"Oh, Kolas, you made it too? Hahaha!" Luffy laughed.
The pirates stared at the two boys who'd just come out of barrels, completely confused. "Who the hell are you guys?!"
"I'm Luffy! And this is Kolas, my vice captain!" Luffy introduced them casually.
"And I'm the guy who almost drowned because of this hard-working captain!" Kolas said sarcastically, then turned and saw a boy with glasses standing there trembling. "Oh... that's Coby."
"Huh?! How do you know my name?!" Coby's eyes went wide, more confused than ever.
"Never mind that." Kolas walked over and patted Coby's shoulder. "You seem like a good guy. You shouldn't be with that big old lady."
"Ol... old lady?!" Coby went pale. "Don't say it so loud! If Lady Alvida hears you, we'll all get beaten to death with the spiked club!"
The Alvida pirates pulled themselves together and drew their swords. "You bastards! How dare you insult Lady Alvida! Die!"
Two pirates rushed in right away. Luffy dodged easily. Kolas wasn't as strong as Luffy, so he used his speed, stuck out his foot and hooked one pirate's leg, and the guy fell and banged his head on the floor, thunk! Out cold, another one down.
"Heh heh... don't underestimate my speed, man." Kolas smiled cheekily and posed in front of Coby.
"Amazing..." Coby stared, wide-eyed.
The rest of the crew ran up to the deck to tell Alvida. Luffy and Kolas followed up without hurrying, with Coby trembling right behind them.
When they got up on deck, Old Lady Alvida stood there holding a giant spiked club, glaring at them with huge eyes full of rage.
"Who the hell are you! How dare you invade my ship!" Alvida shouted. "Coby! Tell them who's the most beautiful person on this sea!"
Coby shook all over and lowered his head, not daring to speak. But when he looked at Luffy standing there grinning, and Kolas beside him cheering him on with his eyes, Coby found some courage in his heart.
"It... it's not you!" Coby took a deep breath and shouted at the top of his lungs. "The ugliest person on this sea is an old hag like you!"
"Aaaaagh! How dare you, you little brat!" Alvida went dizzy with rage and swung the giant spiked club down on Coby's head with all her strength!
Whoosh!
Luffy dashed in front of Coby. The spiked club hit Luffy right on the head with a loud bonnnng! But the club bounced right back like it had hit a car tire!
"What?! Why is he fine?!" Alvida was so shocked her mouth almost hung open.
"Hahaha, doesn't hurt at all!" Luffy grinned. "Because I'm a rubber man!"
Luffy pulled his right arm back until it was stretched tight.
"Alright then... Gum-Gum... Cannon!"
Booooom!
Luffy's fist hit Alvida right in the face! The old lady's giant body screamed and flew across the sky and disappeared! The rest of the crew's knees went weak, and they all raised their hands in surrender.
"Amaaazing! You punched her all the way out of sight, Captain!" Kolas laughed and clapped, feeling great.
Coby stood with his mouth open, looking at Luffy with total respect. "That was amazing... Luffy, Kolas... what are your dreams?"
Luffy grinned and pointed at the sea. "I'm going to be the Pirate King, for sure!"
"And me... I'm the vice captain who's gonna take this dumb captain all the way to his dream!" Kolas smiled cheekily and raised his eyebrows at Coby.
"Then me... I want to be a Marine! I'll work hard and become a strong Marine!" Coby announced his dream with a smile.
And this was the start of the journey of the Straw Hat Pirates, with Kolas the vice captain traveling along!

After dealing with Old Lady Alvida, the crew fled in terror down to small boats. Luffy and Coby were busy looking for a decent rowboat so they could continue their journey.
Kolas quietly wandered around the rooms of Alvida's ship, until he went deep into the treasure room on the lowest level.
His eyes stopped on one treasure chest sitting in the corner of the room...
Huh... this chest wasn't in this spot in the anime. Where did it come from? Kolas frowned. Curious, he walked over and lifted the lid.
What was inside... was a strange-looking fruit!
The fruit had a bumpy skin, and the pattern all around it looked kind of like lots of index fingers lined up!
"What fruit is this, damn, it's so weird and ugly!" Kolas muttered, picking up the fruit to look at it closely.
Then it hit him. Hey... this story has Devil Fruits! Maybe this is the power God sent me! Since I crossed over as a normal, ordinary guy, with no swordsmanship, no Haki, eating this might make me stronger!
"Screw it! Let's try it!"
Chomp!
Kolas took a big bite... and his face twisted right away!
"I almost puked! It tastes horrible!" Kolas almost wanted to spit it out, but he had no choice. He closed his eyes, forced it down, and swallowed, gulp!
After swallowing, Kolas stood still, waiting anxiously for the power... ten seconds went by, twenty seconds, and nothing happened.
"Where's the power? What the hell?!" Kolas started losing his temper and tried weird poses, straining. "Fire! Earth! Lightning! Nothing damn comes out at all!"
He tried transformation poses and random power-release poses, squatting and stretching out his hands, but nothing happened, until he raised his hand, held up two fingers in front of him, and joked to himself.
"Or maybe I should try this pose... hey! Sailor Moon Power!"
Flash!
Just then both of his index fingertips lit up bright!
"No damn way! It actually worked!" Kolas's eyes went as wide as goose eggs, and he was so shocked he almost slipped.
The power he had just gained was the power of the "Joki Joki no Mi" (Index Finger Fruit), Paramecia type! A power that gave every one of his fingers massive destructive force. He only had to focus on one finger and point at the target, and the power would lock on and fire a laser beam from the tip, exactly like Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon!
Even better, every finger could fire a laser! And if he spread several fingers at once, the beams would combine into a giant laser cannon, super dangerous!
Kolas grinned, his fighting spirit at its peak, and walked back up to the deck with his new power.
"Luffy! Coby! Check this out, dude!" Kolas shouted.
Luffy and Coby turned around, confused, so Kolas held up his index finger and aimed at a giant rock on the beach next to the ship.
Kaboooom! Booooom!
A bright laser beam shot out of Kolas's index finger and slammed into the giant rock, blowing it to dust in an instant! The blast wind sent rock fragments scattering across the deck!
"Whoa! That's so damn cool!" Luffy's eyes sparkled, and he laughed happily. "So cool, Kolas! You're really my first vice captain, it has to be this amazing!"
Coby stood staring, with his jaw almost dropping to the floor, looking at the exploded rock fragments in awe. "That was... amazing, Kolas!"
Kolas looked at his finger and blew on the tip lightly, raising his eyebrows and posing cool. "Heh heh... from now on the Straw Hat Pirates won't just have a rubber man!"
